SUBMISSIONS

At A Midnight Kind of Place, we publish short horror fiction worth talking about.

Along with publishing some of the greats and other writers worth celebrating, we’re opening for the following anthologies that will be published in 2026 and 2027.

If I receive a tonne of great submissions quickly, I may slide dates forward and reshuffle accordingly.

I’m looking for quality, the next big voice in the horror-sphere. Creep me out. Break my heart. Make me remember. I’ll publish anyone as long as the story is brilliant. This is a quality project, not a quota project.

A note on AI: This is a human market. No AI allowed . Anyone caught sending me AI-produced submissions will be blackballed. As successful stories are edited, we’ll never input your work into any AI tool such as Co-Pilot or ProWriting Aid. We use our own eyes here.

Guidelines across all calls

We’ll be accepting originals and reprints across all calls. Original fiction will receive £30 (GBP), reprints will receive £10 (GBP). These will be one-off payments. All successful contributors will receive a free e-copy of the finished product.

All calls will request print, digital, and audio rights. For original work, we’ll be asking for exclusivity for a period of three months.

Simultaneous submissions are fine. Multiple submissions are fine (though I plead that you not flood me too much!).

All calls will be seeking stories from 1,000 – 10,000 words. We aim to send out responses within 60 days of receiving your submission. Each entrant should follow the standard Shunn manuscript format.

Please send a short bio in your email and feel free to tell me what your favourite short story is.

All submissions should be sent to submissions@amidnightkindofplace.com as word doc attachments (no pdfs!). PLEASE USE THE TITLE OF THE PROJECT IN THE SUBJECT OF YOUR EMAIL.
